The end of the month means all eyes are on what delightful freebies subscribers to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold members will be treated to for August. The former let the cat out of the bag a little earlier than usual thanks to a legitimate self-leak a few days ago, hence why we’re covering a little early. We now also know what Microsoft has in store for August's selection of Games with Gold titles, which turns out is equally worth getting excited about. Here's what both subscription services have in store...
Sony itself leaked August 2021’s PlayStation Plus line-up by uploading to its own official website much earlier than planned. That post may have since been taken down, sure, but not before a few eagle-eyed players took a screen grab. That’s how we know that PS5 players will soon be gifted Hunter’s Arena: Legends, while PS4 players get a double helping of Plants Vs Zombies: Battle for Neighbourville and Tennis World Tour 2 – all of which become available to download from August 3rd onwards.
Here’s a brief breakdown of every PS Plus title arriving in August:
Hunter’s Arena: Legends: Because you can never have enough Battle Royale games, Hunter’s Arena: Legends launches straight into PS Plus for players on PS5 this August 3rd. Having already released in Early Access on PC last year, PS5 players will be able to dive into this mystical world and try to survive against others in this 30-player combat-battler based around PvP and PvE modes. It represents a sharp change of style to other Battle Royales based around gun warfare, letting you indulge in mystical magical attacks in order to be the last player standing.
Plants Vs Zombies: Battle for Neighbourville: The online fun continues for PS4 players in this third official entry in EA’s more colourful take on competitive shooting. One side takes the side of plants, the other zombies, but as well as inventive PvP modes, Battle for Neighbourville shakes things up by giving you a hub to explore and roam. You’ll be able to take on single-player missions or team up with others, all in a colourful third-person shooter ideal for all family members.
Tennis World Tour 2: Tennis World Tour 2 couldn’t arrive at a much better time for PS Plus subscribers, letting players take to the court and duke it out against iconic players like Federer and Nadal. Players on PS4 and PS5 will be able to perfect their game whilst competing in a range of worldwide opens and tournaments, mastering swings and climbing up through the world rankings in World Tour 2’s dedicated career mode.

Xbox players have often struggled to get excited about the monthly crop of Games with Gold titles. However, things finally look to be turning around for the month of August 2021, which features an eclectic selection that appears to have something for everybody. Whether you’re into hellish action games that cast you down to explore a ravaged Earth or an old-school 3D platformer, below we’ll cover in detail what you can expect from Games with Gold in August.
Here’s a brief breakdown of every Games with Gold title arriving in August:
Darksiders III: This third entry into THQ’s cult-classic action series sets you in the shoes of Fury, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse who must venture to Earth in search of the seven deadly sins. Unlike the previous two games, however, Darksiders III plays a lot more like Dark Souls in that you must plan your attacks out, and deploy different strategies depending on the enemy type you’re facing. Darksiders III becomes available to Games with Gold members on August 1st, being the perfect hellish action game in which to reap some souls.
Yooka-Laylee: A clear homage to the likes of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee is a throwback to the classic era of old-school 3D platformers. The visuals are colourful, the platforming challenges fun, and it’s all wrapped up in a whimsical story that sees the titular duo go up against evil CEO Capital B. You’ll hunt down items, explore a range of vibrant environments and relive the glory days of collect-a-thons from August 16th onwards.
Lost Planet 3: IF you’re in the mood for an eery third-person shooter with Sci-Fi elements, the underappreciated third game into Capcom’s bug-blasing Lost Planet series should do the trick. Taking place long before the first game in the series, you’ll venture across many of the dangers that planet E.D.N III has to offer. Lost Planet 3 is more narrative-driven compared to the previous two entries, letting you complete missions and side quests while trying to survive. It arrives on Xbox Live Gold this August 1st.
Garou: Mark of the Wolves: Made playable through Xbox’s excellent backwards compatibility program, Garou: Mark of the Wolves is a classic fighting game from legendary Japanese developer SNK. It’s the last instalment into the classic Fatal Fury franchise, letting you duke it out and participate in tournaments as a dozen different fighters with their own attitudes and move sets. Never before has it been easier to become the King of Fighters.
