After months of continuous speculation and rumour, 2020’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was officially revealed yesterday. It was announced that this year’s entry will indeed be a direct sequel to 2010’s original Call of Duty: Black Ops, with the campaign portion being developed by Raven Software and Treyarch taking up multiplayer duties. New information has been trickling out ever since, with the big takeaway being that the game will run at 120fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

This news comes by way of a preview published over on Venturebeat, where the writer went on to state that Cold War will “play at 4K resolution and refresh rates at 120hz”. What wasn’t made clear is in which modes or in what capacity 120fps will be supported, though it’d be safe to assume that its being planned for the single-player campaign. In addition to this high frame rate, a global illumination system and real-time ray tracing will also be made possible, it has been suggested.

If true, this would make Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War only the second known game to support 120fps – the other being Dirt 5 from Codemasters. Why so few? Even on next-gen consoles, 120fps will be a strain for the hardware and will only work properly on modern TVs featuring HDMI 2.1 built in. More so than PlayStation 5, Microsoft has been a bit more lavish with its 120fps claims by featuring it in a lot of marketing for the Xbox Series X.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is now available to pre-order for both PS4 and Xbox One ahead of its official launch on November 13th. If you’re not planning to pick up a next-console at launch, be sure to grab it at the lowest price below:
