Soon entering January means we can finally leave the tortuous
2020 behind us. The new year brings with it a fresh start, and with it a
handful of major game releases that are well worth checking out on every platform.
This is our monthly round-up blog where we run through exactly that. Because although
most of us will still be polishing off some of November and December’s
blockbuster games, we just know there are players out there waiting for their next
big fix of contemporary releases.
The biggest releases is inarguably the next chapter in IO
Interactive’s Hitman series, which looks to be kicking off 2021 in a rather
slick and smooth fashion. Outside of this, though, we think there are a couple
more treats worth highlighting. Here’s what’s in store for consoles in January
2021.
Two weeks into the new year comes MXPGP 2020, marking the
first time the official motocross video game will have appeared on PlayStation
5 and Xbox Series S|X. It offers enthusiast gearheads the ability to saddle up
and rev out as 68 riders from the MXGP and MX2 categories, letting you duke it
out across 19 real-life circuits as part of the thrilling 2020 season. MXPGP
2020 comes to last-gen consoles as well as the new boxes, but this is a racing
game perfectly positioned to take advantage of the new hardware. Look forward
to it on January 14th.
Delisted on digital storefronts quickly after its 2010 debut,
fans of either the original Scott Pilgrim comic or movie can rest easy knowing
that Ubisoft’s video game version returns in January 2021. Known officially as Scott
Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition, it’s a remaster of the
side-scrolling 2D beat-em-up classic that also bundles in both DLC packs. It
might not be coming to Xbox Series S|X and PS5 but they’ll play just as great on
those machines in their last-gen versions. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The
Game – Complete Edition is a true cult classic that’s returning on January 14th.

The biggest release to hit in January 2021 is Hitman 3 on
the 20th, arriving on both previous and current-gen consoles to let
players fulfil their dream once again as the world’s best assassin. It introduces
six new locations, ranging from Dartmoor and Dubai, all of which provide a
suite of kill opportunities for Agent 47 to take advantage of. As was the case
with the move from Hitman to Hitman 2, locations from the previous games will
be made playable in Hitman 3; you’re never short on sandboxes to explore. It’s
the third and final entry into IO Interactive’s reboot truly, so expect it to
go out with a bang.
Ride 4 may have already released on Xbox One and PlayStation
4 back in October, but January is when the souped-up versions of this classic
racing series arrive on current-gen. For those unaware, Ride 4 is considered by
many to be the ultimate racing experience for two-wheel racing lovers, painstakingly
recreating hundreds of bikes, tracks and riders in incredible detail. This it
does while still being fun to play and control, easily making January 21st
a date to watch for racing fans.

The Medium is the next big horror game from Layers of fear
developer Bloober Team, acting as a true console exclusive that is only
playable on Xbox Series S|X (and PC). It challenges players to traverse two
different worlds simultaneously as the titular hero, inspired heavily by the
horror stylings of Silent Hill. You’re the only one able to navigate between
these two worlds and thus are needed to solve the unravelling mystery. Play it
on January 28th when it arrives on Xbox.
