Being midway through the month means that the NPD Group has done its usual thing in sharing insightful video game sales data in relation to North America. While not representative of us here in the UK, it can still reveal some interesting nuggets of information. Chief amongst these is the fact that game content reached $3.3 billion in sales (up 34% on last year ) and which of July’s video games sold best.

Unsurprisingly, both Ghost of Tsushima and Paper Mario: The Origami King were the two leaders of the pack, being some of last month’s high-profile releases. The PS4 exclusive open-world title eventually came out on top, placing #1 for physical video game sales in North America throughout the month of July and quickly being followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at #2 and Paper Mario: The Origami King at #3.

Here’s the full list of the best-selling video games in North America last month:

  1. Ghost of Tsushima
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  3. Paper Mario: The Origami King
  • The Last of Us Part 2
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Ring Fit Adventure
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris
  • Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege
  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
  • MLB: The Show 20
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  • Need for Speed: Heat
  • Marvel's Spider-Man
  • Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III
  • Another cool titbit was in how Grand Theft Auto V didn’t chart in the top 20 at all in July, which is extremely surprisingly considering that it has continued to sell ganagbusters since it’s initial release back in 2013. However, don’t expect Rockstar’s game to be kept out of here for long. It’s more likely indicative of players who already own that game purchasing other things.

Ghost of Tsushima not only took the top spot for July, but it has now become the fifth best-selling game in North America for the entire year. Yet to try out this Japan-set adventure? We’ll include the best current price for it below:
