The end of the month means that there’s not too much longer
to go until PlayStation and Xbox players can sink their teeth into another crop
of free games. Of course, you have to be subscribed to either platform’s online
membership to treat yourself to these titles, but in the grand scheme of things
paying roughly £40 a year for two guaranteed games per month is nothing to be
sniffed at. It’s an… odd selection of games for Microsoft, in particular. Still,
let’s break down what’s in store.
After a really strong selection of games in February, we’re
hard pressed of anyone who wouldn’t think that March’s Games with Gold titles
is a massive come down. Whereas before Xbox Gold members were treated to Triple-A
franchises like Gears of War and Resident Evil, March 2021 ventures into the
more obscure. It all kicks on March 1st when the first two (out of
the total four) Games with Gold titles become available: Metal Slug 3 and Warface:
Breakout. Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse and Port Royale 3 will then follow on
March 16th.
Here’s a brief breakdown of every Games with Gold title
arriving in March:
Warface: Breakout: Questionably silly name aside,
Warfare: Breakout is a co-op-based tactical online first-person shooter that continues
to be popular amongst its devout player base. It released on consoles early
last year, and is gearing up for a new event scheduled to take place between
March 8th and March 22nd. Xbox Gold subscribers will be
able to join in on this fun ahead of time when Warfare: Breakout becomes free
to download on the 1st of the month. This version even comes with an
exclusive content back, so you’ll be able to gun down rivals in style with
unique weapon skins and helmets.
Metal Slug 3: The second game available to members on
March 1st, Metal Slug 3 is the Xbox 360 port which is forwards
compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series S|X. It’s hardcore run and gun fun at
its most hardcore, challenging you to get from one side of the screen to the
other while trying to dodge a gauntlet of fast-firing enemies and bullets. You
and a friend can play as Marco and Tarma tackling these forces together, using
a variety of weapons in the attempt to stay alive.
Port Royale 3: Pirate games don’t tend to come around
that often, so when you can play one for free it’s worth trying out, right?
Port Royale 3 is gifted to Xbox Gold members on March 16th, casting
players as a young sea captain who must navigate the turbulent 17th
century. It’s a top-down strategy game where you must build and frow your own
trading port, bartering with visitors and fending off invaders to be successful.
Port Royale 3 also sees you embark on thrilling naval battles.
Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse: Seeking a twin-stick
shooter with a difference? You might find it in Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse,
which brings its four-player co-operative action to Xbox Gold subscribers on
March 16th. A good feature of this one is its cross-play
functionality, allowing PC and Xbox players to play together seamlessly. Most
of your time will be spent piloting endless mechs while attempting to survive
the Llama hordes, navigating the chaotic city by blasting away Llamas like it’s
your job – in this case it actually is.

PlayStation continues to come out swinging with a selection
of three PS4 games and one PS5 games available to PlayStation Plus subscribers.
Plus, it’s worth not forgetting that the month of March is when Sony’s ‘Play at
Home’ initiative is revived, so every player can also get Ratchet & Clank
(2016) for free – with or without a PS Plus subscription. All in all, it’s an
exciting time to be a PlayStation player. But what four treats do PS Plus members
have to look forward to? It all begins this March 2nd.
Here’s a brief breakdown of every PlayStation Plus game
arriving in March:
Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4): Leading the pack of
this month’s PS Plus selection is the critically acclaimed ground-up remake of
Final Fantasy VII. Reconstructing the classic PlayStation One game’s story and infusing
it with modern graphics and mechanical sensibilities, this is a total
reinvention of most people’s favourite Final Fantasy entry. Cloud and the other
members of Avalanche have never looked better than in this PS4 version, which
lets newcomers and veterans experience the first part of this sprawling tale
under the guise of a modern game.
Farpoint (PSVR): It’s been a while since PS Plus gave
PSVR owners a treat, but that now seems to have been remedied this month thanks
to the inclusion of Farpoint. It’s a fully-featured first-person shooter that whisks
you away to Mars while trying to fend of hordes and hordes of alien spiders. It
was designed specifically with the PlayStation VR Aim controller in mind, seeing
you blast away enemies as believably as possible by letting you aim down your
sights and reload in real-time in VR. Pick it up if you want to show your PSVR
headset some love.
Maquette (PS5): The PlayStation 5 catalogue still
continues to be sparse almost four months after its launch, but that hasn’t stopped
Sony from giving console owners a reason to be excited. In this case it’s
Marquette, a totally new first-person puzzle game that launches on March 2nd
and tasks players to solve the mysteries of its world. Hevay focussing on the
relationship between two characters in Kenzie and Michael, Maquette promises to
weave a modern-day love story with some fun puzzle thrown in.
Remnant: From the Ashes (PS4): Strongly inspired by
the Souls subgenre of Hardcore Action-RPGS, Remnant: From the Ashes first
released on PS4 in 2019 as a mixture of melee combat and third-person shooter.
The latter mechanic is what helps separate the game from the likes of
Bloodborne and the like, giving you all the tools needed to complete sections
and attack enemies using a wide variety of fight tactics – even from far away. This
is a challenging action game that’s quickly become a cult classic, now free for
PS Plus members to download from March 2nd onwards.
