Dialled-in players will have noticed that we are now well past the time of year when Activision would typically announce the next Call of Duty. It’s all but confirmed that Treyarch will be the next developer stepping up to the plate, but still the Triple-A publisher has been silent as to which subseries will return and indeed how. That is, until recent dataminers were able to uncover some very interesting details….

It all goes back to a mysterious listing that popped up on the Microsoft Store last week, where a mysterious game titled The Red Door was speculated to be an alpha build for the next Call of Duty. Fans quickly put together that this was in some way a reference to the Black Ops line of Call of Duty games, but now dataminers investigating the build have since uncovered details relating to the game’s campaign, multiplayer and what this year’s entry will potentially be called.

Black Ops Cold War is allegedly the name of 2020’s Call of Duty instalment, indicating a return to the cast of characters first introduced in the first Black Ops back in 2010. This makes a lot of sense considering that this year marks the 10-year anniversary since the release of that original game. Details exhumed by breaking open The Red Door file featured what appears to be a list of campaign mission names. That full list is as follows…

  • G.B. (Russia)
  • Siege (Russia)
  • Yamantau (Russia)
  • Takedown (Side Mission)
  • Tundra (Side Mission)
  • Hub (Germany)
  • Hub 8 (Germany)
  • Stakeout (Germany)
  • Armada (Vietnam)
  • Prisoner (Vietnam)
  • Revolucion (Nicaragua)
  • Amerika (Russia)
  • Duga (Russia)

Should this prove to be true, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War looks to be taking you on a whistle-stop tour across the globe once again, going bigger and better with its campaign after the previous Black Ops game left it out in favour of a Battle Royale mode. And if that wasn’t enough, names for several of the game’s maps have also been picked out: Black Sea, Cartel, K.G.B., Miami, Moscow, Satellite, Tank, and Tundra.

Activision is yet to comment on any of the leaks or indeed the purpose of this mysterious The Red Door listing on the Microsoft Store. It could be that they had a whole ARG-style meta marketing plan scheduled to roll out soon, yet if that’s the case those plans have now been blown. Still, another Black Ops instalment that takes lace primarily in the ‘60s sounds like a welcome change from last year’s Modern Warfare reboot. We’ll update you with more info on the game soon.
