We previously heard that there were big things planned this year to celebrate Super Mario's 35th birthday, and it would appear that Nintendo is now finally ready to start showing off some of the stuff that's in store. Paper Mario: The Origami King was just surprised announced today, serving as an all-new entry in the colourful turn-based spin-off series. Set to arrive on Nintendo Switch as early as July 17th, you won't have to wait too long to get your hands on it.

Paper Mario: The Origami King looks to play extremely similarly to previous titles in the series, challenging you to work your way through a papercraft world as a 2D mario, battling and exploring in what looks to be a real feast for the eyes. Only this time there looks to be an Origami twist! The game was officially unveiled via a Tweet from nintendo of America of on Twitter (see below):

The official press release from Nintendo helps give a better idea of what to expect from the story this time around:

"Are you ready for your fun to in-crease tenfold?," it reads. "Well, a special invitation to a colourful, paper-crafted world has arrived. Join Princess Peach, Mario and Luigi in attending the kingdom’s origami festival when Paper Mario: The Origami King launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on 17th July. There’s one tiny wrinkle in the festivities, though: Princess Peach seemed to be acting a little strange lately."

The Origami King marks the first Paper Mario game to release since Paper Mario: Colour Splash for the Nintendo Wii U in 2016, and looks to be using the full power of the Nintendo Switch to its advantage. The press release goes on to highlight several new features as well, including "a new ability called 1000-Fold Arms allows players to interact with the landscape by stretching out and revealing new locations". The battle system is even being given a slight tweak, with "a new ring-based battle system

being implemented

that allows players to flex their puzzle-solving skills."

The most exciting thing is that this is only the beginning, if previous reports are to be believed. Expect more exciting Mario-themed games and ports to be revealed for the Switch as the Summer continues on, including potential remasters of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. We'll keep you posted!
