If Nintendo's flagship Switch console has thus far proved the biggest surprise of the gaming world in 2017, Nintendo's announcement that they'll be launching a Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System this Autumn (on September, 29th to be exact) must surely rank as one of the most predictable moves of the year.
Last year's NES Mini was a phenomenal success, becoming one of the must-have items of the festive period. In fact, it was so successful that it took Nintendo completely by surprise, leading to worldwide stock shortages almost immediately that continued right through to their announcement that they were discontinuing the console in April.
The huge success of the system made a SNES Mini almost inevitable, and Nintendo have delivered with a fantastic offering. Retailing at between £69.99 and £79.99, the system would be a bargain with just a fraction of the games it has built in:
The list boasts a bunch of classic titles that are certain to keep you and your friends and family occupied well into the new year. As a bonus, and as if the SNES Mini needed any more reasons to sell, the system will even include Star Fox 2. This Shigeru Miyamoto-produced game has become legendary thanks to it being completed for the original SNES yet never officially released.
Of course, the million dollar question is will you be able to get your hands on one?
Well, on the plus side, Nintendo have already been burned once by the huge missed opportunity with the NES Mini. We're hoping that they will have anticipated much greater demand this time around. Initially signs are good, with two different models being produced; one emulating the look of the Japanese and European-style SNES, while the US will get their own one emulating their classic purple design.
However, as we have seen with the Switch, it's hard to meet demand even with production lines working around the clock. We'll have to hope that Nintendo have planned to sell a lot!
