We've talked plenty about how successful the PS4 has been since its launch. With almost 80 million units sold, the PS4 will easily surpass the PS3 and Xbox 360 this year and could even break the 100 million units mark, a number surpassed by only three home consoles previously.
According to the latest rumours, it continues to dominate this generation when it comes to sales, selling more than double what the Xbox One is currently managing. The latest exclusive, God of War, is selling so well that PS4 Pro models are currently scarce.
With the wind in its sails, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the last thing Sony would want to do is kick start the discussion about the next generation of consoles. However, that's apparently what Sony Interactive Entertainment chief John Kodera did when on a call with investors, per the Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki:
PS chief Kodera: PS4 is entering final phase of its life cycle, which would have negative impact to the unit, but recurring revenue via membership services etc should cushion some of that.

However, if you've recently invested in a PS4 or PS4 Pro, don't despair; there's still plenty of life in the console yet. In the same interview, Kodera stated the company would be "crouching down" for the next three years before making their next major move in the video game sector. This suggests that we may be waiting until November (the month Sony have favoured recently for releases) 2021 for the PS5.
Should that date prove accurate, then the PS4 will have enjoyed an eight year lifespan, compared to the seven years the PS3 got and the six years of the PS2. As the PS4 has, unlike its predecessors, had a mid-generation update with the Pro, it wouldn't be a surprise to see it outlast the typical console lifespan.
