In a bid to sustain steady sales momentum for its hybrid console going into its third year on the market, a report from The Wall Street Journal suggests that the Nintendo Switch will see two new models added to its line-up as early as this summer. One of the models is said to be a cheaper variant aimed at casual players, while a third, so-called “pro” version will allegedly feature “enhanced features targeted at avid video gamers.”

This news comes hot off the heels of rumours that Nintendo is set to officially cease production on its various duel-screen handheld consoles. So, with the writing seemingly on the wall for the 3DS, New 3DS and the 2DS, could a cheaper version of the Nintendo Switch arrive to fill that gap? Enthusiasts have also been similarly speculating for a while whether or not Nintendo will have its own mid-tier console iteration, comparable to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, to keep die-hard players interested.

The WSJ report claims that the cheaper of the two models will omit the Nintendo Switch’s HD Rumble feature to help reduce cost, possibly indicating that the Joy-Cons either side won’t be detachable. There’s less known about the higher-end model, but there’s clearly room for improvement with regards to the existing Nintendo Switch console where processing power is much more limited compared to what’s possible on PS4 and Xbox One.

Does the idea of a more affordable Nintendo Switch console appeal to you? Maybe you’d like a variant that can push the graphical potential of games like Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker? The Wall Street journal doesn’t tend to speculate on rumour, so we’ll update this piece as soon as more information is known.

And while we await news of new Switch consoles, why not take a look at the current best Nintendo Switch bundle options on the market?
