Ah, September… It’s around this time of year where we officially enter the ‘busy season’ of video games, with triple-A and indie releases both coming thick and fast, consoles getting discounted and new announcements being made. The September Nintendo Direct that occurred on Wednesday seemingly kicked this off, treating Switch players to a flurry of exciting new reveals and releases to look forward to.
But what if you’re left wondering about what the most exciting highlights were? Well here, we’ve saved you the job of scouring through the full 40-minute video, discussing all the Nintendo Direct announcements worth falling over for. Here it all is in one handy place:
Since the announcement of Nintendo Switch Online, players have been clamouring for more reasons to subscribe. You’d get online compatibility for games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2, as well as access to NES games, sure, but what people really wanted was access to the vast library of great SNES games. Well this Nintendo Direct finally revealed it was coming for Nintendo Switch subscribers, with great games like Super Metroid, Super Mario World and others available to play now. Most of these were already released on the SNES Mini, but now you can play them on Switch.
As one of the Nintendo Switch’s hallmark titles, Super Smash Bros continues to go from strength to strength with the release of every new DLC fighter. Related news to this came two-fold during the September Nintendo Direct, when it was revealed that already announced fighter Banjo Kazooie would be available today and the next fighter being shown. It’s none other than Fatal Fury’s Terry Bogard, who will arrive sometime before the end of the year.
Having already released Assassin’s Creed III Remastered for Nintendo Switch earlier this year, it was always a safe bet that we’d see more great entries to this Ubisoft series come across. What we didn’t expect was that it’d be two in one go, as Assassin’s Creed Rebel Collection bundles together Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Rogue into one neat collection. The Assassin’s Creed Rebel Collection comes to Switch on December 6th, so not long to wait.
Backing up speculation last week after the leak of a potential Nintendo Switch case, the September Nintendo Direct confirmed that Overwatch would be coming to Nintendo’s console. As one of the biggest and most popular multiplayer games on the planet, this is a huge get, marking the first time you can take Blizzard Entertainment’s hero shooter with you on the go. Overwatch for Switch will arrive October 15th.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 was already shaping up to be one of the biggest Nintendo Switch releases of the year, being the first true HD version of the ghost-busting spook-em-up. Multiplayer with friends was already confirmed, but this new Nintendo Direct showcased a new mode called “Scream Park”, which will pit one team of Luigis and one team of Goo-igis against one another in arena battles.
Numerous times during the Nintendo Direct did we dip into expected territory, where a slew of great indie games was revealed to be making the jump from other consoles to Nintendo Switch. Of these, Return of the Obra Dinn, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Tokyo Mirage Sessions were the ones who piqued our interest most. The last of which was previously a Wii U title, so here’s hoping the second wind can help give it life with a new audience.
If super stylised anime mech battles are your thing, you’ll no doubt have had your eye on Daemon X Machina. The new third-person action game from developer MARVELOUS! promises to deliver in-depth gameplay and numerous customisation options, giving players all the tools they need to wreck shop during skyscraper-sized boss battles. You can get your next taste of the game by downloading the newly announced second demo.
