Though primarily another online-centric first-person shooter on Xbox, Battlefield V also gives single-player gamers with a series of “War Stories” that allows them to experience the best and worst of World War II. The tone of the game may be somber, but overcoming the odds from the perspective of various characters in history is a unique spin that always keeps the FPS action fresh. Couple this with the return of Battlefield’s trademark destructive environments, and you have a solid Xbox first-person shooter that’s worth playing.
Featuring four new vault hunters to play as and an entire galaxy’s worth of planets to explore, Borderlands 3 is a rambunctious return for Gearbox’s looter-shooter series with attitude. Picking up directly where the last game left off, you can enjoy four-player online co-op seamlessly with players across Xbox One and Xbox Series S|X consoles, scouring planets for better guns and gear in a story that is as zany as it is varied. Seeking an Xbox first-person shooter with style? Borderlands 3 will do it.
Halo 5: Guardiansis the latest entry in Microsoft’s longstanding Sci-Fi series until the eventual arrival of Halo: Infinite later this year. It easily claims the top spot for being the most beautiful Halo game yet, letting you and a team of three others fight against the Covenant in a two-pronged campaign that sees the fabled Master Chief on the run. It’s your job to chase him down as Spartan Locke, leading fireteam Osirirs on a galaxy-spanning journey where the shooting is more satisfying than ever.
Blasting away Nazis has never been better than in Wolfenstein: The New Order, the 2014 reboot which modernized the mission of BJ Blazkowicz for an all-new generation of players. Set in an alternate period of history where Hitler in fact did win World War Two, it’s your job to prevent the German death machine from rolling in any further by joining the resistance and gunning down any Nazi who stands in your way. Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of the best narrative-driven first-person shooters available to play on Xbox.

More of a survival horror game than a strict first-person shooter, Ethan’s journey to save his daughter in Resident Evil: Village still firmly takes place from behind the view of a gun. This makes for a creepy experience that is far more eerily creepy than ever before, encouraging you to make every bullet count when going up against vampires, werewolves and more. Sure, Capcom’s latest might be slower paced than more traditional first-person shooters, but that’s what makes it great.
Call of Duty’s latest entry once again winds the clock back to the Cold War era, giving players on Xbox the direct sequel to Black Ops they’d been waiting for 10 years later. Classic characters like Mason, Woods and Hudson are all back for some tactical FPS action, letting players shoot and fight their way through a gamut of 80s-infused missions. The multiplayer in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is equally enjoyable, offering up more than enough weapons and seasonal events to keep you engaged.

When it comes to online first-person shooters that forces you to balance strategy and accuracy, you can’t do much better than Overwatch. Blizzard’s hero shooter continues to light up the Twitch streams worldwide five years after it launched. Several new characters – each with their own unique guns and abilities – have been added since launch, giving two teams of four all the tools they need to defeat rivals in game modes like Assault, Control and Escort. Xbox players don’t miss out!
Often regarded as having one of the best first-person shooter campaigns of all time, Titanfall 2 is an enjoyable sci-fi romp that has you teaming up with a robot to stop the destruction of the planet. It offers Xbox players two styles of play: traditional first-person gunplay and mech piloting. This combination lends Titanfall 2 a very different flavour compared to most other first-person shooters on Xbox, hence why we think it’s a must-play.
The 2016 reboot of Doom changed the rules. No longer would Xbox players have to stay in cover on the backfoot, instead being encouraged to “push forward” and make the monsters afraid of you. Doom Eternal continues this core idea but enhances it further, challenging you to maintain your health, armour and ammo stock by using different attack types to replenish them. All this makes the right first-person gunplay in Doom Eternal extremely fast-paced and infinitely rewarding.
When 343 Industries took over the reigns from Bungie to lead on the Halo franchise, there was a lot of pressure. Halo 4 was pretty well received, but little did Xbox players know that waiting in the wings was a video game compilation to end all others. The appropriately named Halo: The Master Chief Collection enhances and remasters a total of six games from the original game all the way up to Haloo 4, letting players shoot their way through almost the entire Halo journey with enhanced audio and visuals. It easily makes our list of the 10 best first-person shooters on Xbox.
