Need more proof of the Xbox Series S and X’s continued success? You might not be able to find many on the shelves currently, true, but then that’s unsurprising judging by recent comments made during an earnings call between Microsoft and its investors. The company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, is on record as stating: "the Xbox Series S and X are our fastest selling consoles ever, with more consoles sold life-to-date than any previous generation."
This news comes just 8 months after both Xbox console SKUs came to market, which independent evaluator VGChartz estimates has sold a total of 5.82 million units so far. This would in fact match Nadella’s factoid, surpassing the Xbox One’s 4.76 million and Xbox 360’s 3.7 million units sold within the same 8-month time frame.
Of course, while this is no doubt great news for Microsoft and a sign of the great headway they’re making, its closest competitor is still far out in the lead. Sony has sold through 9 million PS5 consoles since its launch back in November, putting it roughly a whole third in front of the Xbox’s position on the market. It’s mentioning that both console platforms are still incredibly hard to come by, and ongoing component shortages worldwide are potentially throttling stock. Just imagine a world where the pandemic didn’t happen… how many Xbox and PS5 units will have sold then?
Nadella also stated in the recent earnings call to investors that Microsoft continues to be “all in on games”, indicating that the tech giant shows absolutely no sign of slowing down. Expect to see Xbox Series X and S stock continue to soar, as first-party hits like Psychonauts 2, Halo: Infinite and Twelve minutes launch throughout the year.
