PlayStation Plus began in the days of the PS3, gifting
players two free games per month that could be played for as long as they
stayed subscribed. Today that’s still the case, only now it’s also your gateway
to online gaming, too, as a PS Plus membership is needed to access online
multiplayer in games that support it. Call of Duty, FIFA and plenty more are
all fine PS4 and PS5 games infinitely improved with a PS Plus subscription thanks
to the various online modes.
While you can always set your PS Plus subscription to
auto-renew with a monthly or annual subscription tied to your bank account,
purchasing it via dedicated membership cards could see you save money.
Available in 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-month increments, various online key retailers
constantly sell them much lower than the standard amount PlayStation charges. Be
smart about your PS Plus subscription and stay a member using PS Plus card
deals.
The biggest benefit to having a PS Plus Essential subscription is arguably the monthly crop of free games members are treated to. It used to be the case that Vita and PS3 owners received titles, but these days PlayStation has settled on giving away one free PS5 game and two free PS4 games per month. The latter two are also accessible to PS5 players via backwards compatibility.
From the PS4 generation onwards a PS Plus subscription has
been needed to play multiplayer and co-operative games online. It still represents
good value, though, as this allows Sony to effectively maintain and look after
the servers required to keep the PSN stable. The PSN rarely suffers hitches
unless it’s down for maintenance, largely as a result of people’s PS Plus
subscriptions.
As of June 2022, Sony has expanded its offerings of PlayStation Plus and split it into 3 tiers, Essential, Extra and Premium. PlayStation Plus Essential is effectively the old PlayStation Plus so there are no big changes there and this is what your current PlayStation Plus membership will be converted into, it's effectively just a new name. However, the new tiers are more expensive options and come with more features as a result. Below we will break down the three tiers so you know exactly what you're getting, and for how much to aid you in finding the right option.
When it comes to buying these new tiers of PlayStation Plus your best bet is actually to use discounted wallet top-up cards from certain retailers. ShopTo is a good example as well as digital key retailers such as CDKeys. For that reason, we've put our comparison pages for PlayStation Plus Gift cards above for you to easily access so you can save yourself a pretty penny on these new PlayStation Plus tiers. Simply buy the voucher, activate your code on your console via the PSN Store and then use your new funds in order to purchase/upgrade your subscription.
The base package for PlayStation Plus. If you're currently a subscriber this is now what your subscription will be converted into and is effectively just a new name for the old PlayStation Plus. With this tier you will get your monthly one PS5 game, and two PS4 games, access to online play, PSN store discounts and cloud storage.
£6.99 Monthly, £19.99 Quarterly, £49.99 Yearly.
PlayStation Plus Extra is the next tier of PlayStation Plus, granting all the features of PlayStation Plus Essential as well as access to a catalogue of PS5 and PS4 games. The full catalogue can be seen over on the PlayStation website. Some of those most notable titles currently available are God Of War, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Returnal, Assassin's Creed Valhalla and many more. We also hope to see this list expand and have more recent PlayStation exclusives as time goes on.
£10.99 Monthly, £31.99 Quarterly, £83.99 Yearly
So this is the top dog tier, the most expensive and thus the most feature-rich. You will get all the features mentioned in the previous tiers alongside the ability to download a catalogue of PS1, PS2 and PSP classic titles and also stream certain PS3 games to your console. Keep in mind that the PS3 games will not be downloadable and can only be played via streaming (full list available at the PlayStation website). Furthermore, this subscription tier will grant you certain time-limited game trials so you can try games out before you commit to buying them. For example, right now you could try Horizon Forbidden West and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription to determine if they're worth your time and money.
£13.49 Monthly, £39.99 Quarterly, £99.99 Yearly
