Death Stranding is a new PS4 exclusive from Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid and the person primarily credited with coining the term ‘Tactical Espionage Action’. His new game, however, takes a more ethereal approach to the open-world action game, casting players as future delivery man Sam who is trying to restore the United States back to its former glory within a fractured world.

Sam is played by Walking Dead star Norman Reedus, who heads up a wider cast of Hollywood actors such as Mads Mikkelsen and Léa Seydoux. Death Stranding features an abstract story that isn’t like other, more conventional open world games. The game’s title is a reference to the cetacean stranding phenomenon, seemingly tying into the many underlying themes on display.

How will you survive the mysterious world of PS4 exclusive Death Stranding?

The atmosphere Sam is forced to roam around in throughout Death Stranding is always rendered hostile, with enemy forces and harsh weather events constantly ravaging the surrounding landscapes. You can minimise the impact of these by doing your best to avoid the time-changing rain which will immediately age you and the zombie-like B.Ts.

Surviving in this harsh open world is a must for Sam to spread his message of hope. Activating beacons situated along the American border is the only way of doing this, so it pays to always be alert. Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima has promised that this will be a different type of survival game, one that always requires you to be aware and alert .

A focus on traversal instead of stealth

While Hideo Kojima’s previous work on the Metal Gear franchise may have featured a heavy emphasis on stealth, Death Stranding will focus more on strict exploration. You’ll still be doing such things as hiding from enemies in tall grass, bit its creator instead describes it as a “brand new action game with the concept of connection (strand). I call it Social Strand System, or simply Strand Game.”

A hollywood cast of heroes and villains

Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Lindsay Wagner, Léa Seydoux and Guillermo del Toro all head up Death Stranding’s cast, highlighting just how cinematic this unique sci-fi tale will aim to be. Reedus may play delivery man and protagonist Sam but it’s Mikkelsen who will always be hot on your heels with his army as Cliff. But what is he after and how does Sam fit into it?

Death Stranding

Limited edition Death Stranding PS4 Pro from GAME

Being a PS4 exclusives allows Death Stranding to celebrate its release via a limited-edition console. This 1TB PS4 Pro sports a glossy white colour tone, patterned with two black handprints which tie into the game’s B.T creatures. The accompanying Dualshock 4 controller is also a custom design, boasting a translucent orange tone that is the same colour as the game’s BB pod.

A slow-paced commute across the American wasteland

Death Stranding’s style of gameplay is far slower than most other open-world games. Whereas the likes of Metal Gear Solid V and Horizon: Zero Dawn centre heavily on tactical planning and blockbuster action, Death Stranding centres on one man’s sole journey to deliver packages across a ravaged American state. As such, you spend a lot of time traversing the landscape, investing in the game’s melancholic tone.

The act of delivering tasks you to balance risk and reward

Controlling protagonist Sam is a challenge in and of itself, with him being more unwieldly to control the more packages he attempts to balance on his back. Your objective is to connect lost souls by activating beacons, delivering as many goods as possible as to the areas and facilities that need it. You can choose how much extra equipment and resources to carry, however, requiring you to carefully balance all of it using the Dualshock 4’s back triggers.
