Having already dominated the third-person shooter genre thanks to its pioneering emphasis on cover, Gears of Was is now getting ready to stretch its legs by going tactical thanks to a new turn-based strategy spin-off. Developed by The Coalition, the same studio now responsible for the mainline series, Gears Tactics represents your chance to fight the Locust threat from a whole new perspective.

Gears Tactics takes place 12 years before the events of the original game, offering fans some much sought-after back story before Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta squad get to work. It’s an entirely untold chapter never portrayed before – and it’s coming exclusively to PC at launch with an Xbox One version planned later this year.

A whole new top-down perspective taking place in the Gears universe

Following suit from when Halo made the transition from first-person shooter to real-time strategy, Gears Tactics similarly lets you experience this world from a different point of view. You might now be able to see where your Locust enemies are positioned, but the challenge in turn-based strategy games like this is in how you use this information. Will you try to flank enemies and catch them off-guard or attempt to down them before finishing them off with a chainsaw kill? It’s all possible.

Recruit new COG members and form the best team

Gears Tactics might be primarily the tale of Gabe Diaz, the father of Gears 5’s protagonist Kait, but along his journey you’ll be afforded the ability to recruit and train up other COG members. These characters are procedurally generated and therefore wholly customizable, but each slot into their own unique class type – vanguard, heavy, etc. – which each feature unique abilities.

Massive boss battles bookend intense skirmishes

It wouldn’t be a Gears game without colossal bosses. Gears Tactics delivers this in spades, pitting you against all kinds of humongous monsters that take up almost the entire map, forcing you to change up your squad strategy. They completely change the scale of the battle and help to portray the Locust war at its height.
