Just Cause 4 is the latest entry in Square Enix’s action-adventure series that asks the question: What happens when you give a special agent operative a grappling hook? Franchise protagonist Rico Rodriguez returns to help answer that question, this time wreaking havoc in the fictional South American country of Solís. New this time around are extreme weather conditions, added destructible environments and a fresh set of mechanical upgrades that allows Rico Rodriguez take advantage of both.

Solís is an adrenaline junkie’s ultimate dream, helping to take the Just Cause series’ incredible destruction and unique physics to a whole new level thanks to the introduction of storms, blizzards, tornadoes and other bouts of extreme weather. Each of Just Cause 4’s four distinct biomes – Rainforest, Grasslands, Alpine and Desert – offers its own individual, fully simulated weather event, offering players will have a high-octane third-person adventure that sees them traverse an environment that is deep, diverse and dangerous.

Rico’s mission charts his attempts to dismantle antagonist Oscar Espinosa’s militant empire and free the people of Solís. Equipped with his trademark grappling hook that sees him soar through the sky, as well as a wingsuit that allows him to glide through it, Just Cause 4 marks Rico’s most thrilling entry yet.

Wreak chaos in the country of Solís in Just Cause 4

Just Cause 4 represents one of gaming’s most fun destructible playgrounds to be in. Running on an entirely new version of the Apex engine, it provides the same care-free attitude to combat and traversal as developer Avalanche’s other games. To see how players are afforded the chance to make Solís their chaotic paradise, here’s what Just Cause 4 has in store.

Grapple to any surface

While most third-person open worlds require you to trod from mission to mission on foot or hijack a car in pursuit of your next destination, Just Cause 4 equips its protagonist with all the means to get around swiftly and stylishly. It’s all thanks to the franchise’s now-iconic grappling hook, which can launch Rico from area to area when targeted to the appropriate surface. As well as a travel tool the hook also comes in handy in combat scenarios and firefights, letting you attach objects to enemies for some brutal but creative kills.

Traverse through the sky in style

The grappling hook may allow Rico to traverse between short spaces, but when used in tandem with his wingsuit there’s no element on Earth that can prevent him from taking flight. Simply find a high point on the map, drop a waypoint marker, and then glide all the way to glory. The wingsuit also comes in handy during Just Cause 4’s bouts of extreme weather, where Rico can float upwards and around areas to manage tornadoes accordingly.

A suite of destructive weapons

Rico Rodriguez very much represents a one-man army in terms of the many tools and weapons he has at his disposal. There’s your standard assault rifle, sniper rifle, as well as a range of small arms, but its in the game’s experimental weapons where the destructive fun is really had. The lighting gun, for example, shoots out a continuous stream of lighting, while the wind gun easily tosses enemies back thanks to a gust of air.
