Known for creating such massive blockbusters as World of Warcraft and League of Legends, it should have been obvious that Blizzard Entertainment’s first attempt at an FPS would be a sure-fire hit. Overwatch released in 2016 to stellar reviews on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, allowing two teams of six to duke it out and defend control points in the hopes of securing online victory.

A lot of people describe Overwatch as a ‘Hero Shooter’ more so than a traditional FPS, largely due to the game’s emphasis on curated characters. There’s a roster of 30 heroes to get to grips with overall, each offering their own personality and unique styles of play. A great Overwatch team will consist of a variety of these, with certain characters built for damage, others healing, some defense and so on. The Overwatch meta game is much more tactical than perhaps you’d think.

Flexible shooting in a variety of tactical game modes

Whereas most online first-person shooters generally build themselves around standard Team Deathmatch, Overwatch throws a few formula shakeups into the fold to help keep things interesting. Most of the modes are reliant on players securing various control points on a map, holding the opposing team at bay as you try and protect your payload. This forces players out of their comfort zone and encourages movement.

A colourful collection of heroes to master

As already mentioned, most of the appeal found in Overwatch comes from its rich roster of heroes. All come with the ability to shoot but are diversified a bunch by their own two special abilities. Ice-master Mei, for example, has the power to raise up a wall of ice for defense, while Overwatch cover star Tracer can cross great distances quickly thanks to her Blink ability. Discovering the perfect combo of these hero skills help give teams the best edge.

Hone your skills to tournament level

Overwatch has quickly become a global phenomenon, gaining a worldwide audience of viewers that regularly tune in to witness the Overwatch league. It’s here where the game’s best teams compete against each other to win a grand prize pot. This, alongside Blizzard’s popular League of Legends, are some of the most viewed games in eSports. Could you have what it takes to compete in the big leagues one day?

Regular events help keep the action fresh

Rather than have players duke it out on the same map for hours on end, Overwatch regularly introduces limited-time PVP and PVE events to shake things up. These generally are introduced around the same time as real-world holidays like Christmas and Halloween, drenching fan-favourite maps such elements as snow, pumpkins and eggs in amongst other fun themes. Who knows what’ll be waiting for you the next time you log into an Overwatch match.

The acclaimed shooter comes to Nintendo Switch

2019 marks the first time Overwatch will have been playable on Nintendo Switch, letting dedicated players take their tactical shooting skills on the go with them. The Nintendo Switch version is every bui the game seen on PS4, Xbox One and PC, brought up to date with all the recent updates and limited time special events. Overwatch on Switch also features gyroscopic motion controls should you prefer to line up shots that way.
