Following on from the incredible success of 2019’s remake of Resident Evil 2, 2020 is ready to set in those classic scales all over again with Capcom giving us a ground-up reimagining of Resident Evil 3. The new game is developed using the same RE Engine that made Leon and Claire’s adventure such a thrill, updating the character, zombie and world design to the degree that it’ll feel like a modern game. Will you be able to handle the horror?

Resident Evil 3 takes place in the immediate aftermath of the first game, thrusting original protagonist Jill Valentine into the throws of Raccoon City as its being overtaken by the flesh-eating undead. Due for release in April, 2020, Resident Evil 3 retains the same overarching narrative of the original PS One game, deepening it further by flipping the perspective to third-person and seamlessly blending over-the-shoulder shooting with clever puzzle-solving.

The PS One original reimagined for a new generation

The remake of Resident Evil 3 looks to be the definitive version of this survival horror classic, updating the gameplay mechanics and visuals so that its inline with other modern releases. Perspective no longer plays out from fixed camera angles, as the game instead mimics the third-person over-the-shoulder gunplay that’s more akin to Resident Evil 2’s remake or Resident Evil 4. However, despite being based on a 90s PS One game, this new Resident Evil 3 will suit players that are both new and familiar.

The return of Resident Evil 3’s original bad guy: Nemesis

While Resident Evil 2 saw the infamous Mr. X pursue you for the majority of its campaign, Resident Evil 3 kicked this up a notch in the form of Nemesis, an relentless Umbrella experiment designed to follow your every move. You couldn’t truly destroy nemesis in the original Resident Evil 3 campaign, only ever being able to delay his pursuit slightly. Expect Nemesis to tout the same formidable presence in the 2020 remake, as well as his classic “Staaaars!” catchphrase.

A whole new multiplayer mode in Resident Evil: Resistance

Initially revealed as its own separate 4 versus 1 asymmetrical game, Resident Evil: Resistance will actually operate as the multiplayer portion of the Resident Evil 3 remake. Here one player will play as a dungeon master of sorts, laying down traps and obstacles for a team of 4 other players that are forced to survive and overcome them. Resistance features characters and content from the entire Resident Evil history, not just 3.
