Originally released for the Gamecube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2003, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom quickly became fondly thought of by a whole generation of players. 2020 will see the cult classic return by way of a modern remaster, which reimagines the adventures of SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Known officially as the “rehydrated” version, the game is being developed by Purple Lamp Studios, who have taken the time to present Battle for Bikini Bottom using high-end visuals, modern resolutions and gameplay that is just generally more polished. You’ll be challenged to take down Plankton’s evil plan to rule Bikini Bottom, harnessing each character’s unique set of skills.
The PS4 and Xbox One version of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom has never looked better, serving as a faithful remake developed using brand new assets and even restoring some cut content from the original game. A good example of the latter is the Robo Squidward fight, which was meant to be included last time and will now be made available to players new and old.
What with the Spyro Reignited and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy both releasing recently, old-school 3D platformers have been enjoying a bit of a resurgence as of late. However, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom marks an even more impressive milestone, being the first major licenced game of this style to be remade for PS4 and Xbox One. It will look and feel like a modern release.
For those who haven’t played SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom before, it’s worth noting that you don’t just play as the titular sponge. Rather, at certain points in the story, you’ll take over as an entirely new character, having to use their special skills to navigate and experience this world totally differently. Then there’s also an all-new horde mode for 2 players to dive into.
