Following on from the original PS3 exclusive that many people now consider to be one of the best stories ever told in games, The Last of Us: Part II returns this year exclusively on PlayStation 4. No longer, however, do you play as the gruff and tough Joel, instead taking on the role of Ellie who is now much older and out to defend for herself. The narrative jumps ahead a couple of years on from where we last left the two of them, but any long-term hope is still nowhere in sight.
Both Joel and Ellie will be joined by a host of new characters, each helping to bring a new perspective on this war-torn world full of reanimated humans suffering from the cordyceps virus. Taking them down will involve a great deal of scavenging, patience and strategy, with The Last of Us: Part II doubling down on the same great third-person action the first game pulled off so well.

As the first true entry in the series to make its debut on PlayStation 4, The Last of Us: Part II can up its scope and improve graphical fidelity by quite some way. You needn’t look further for proof of this extra horsepower than Joel and Ellie themselves, which arguably make are detailed enough to make players feel like they’re playing the equivalent of a Hollywood film.
Story holds just as much import to developer Naughty Dog as well as graphics, however, and this follow-up journey is all the better for it. Creative Director Neil Druckmann has stated that if the first game was out love The Last of Us Part II “is about hate”. What that explicitly means, no-one knows. But you can guarantee that Ellie and Joel’s follow-up adventure will see both of them grow more as characters. All while exploring the darker side of humanity within a ravaged landscape.
Naughty Dog played a big part in proving how effective the art of motion capture could be in games, where actors not only voice their characters but also inhabit their movements and facial expressions. This technique is what allows lead actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson to deliver more nuanced performances, helping to round out a no holds barred emotional experience – and the very best of what games has to offer.
Of course, in addition to a great story, The Last of Us: Part II sees a return to the third-person action Naughty Dog is known for. While playing as Ellie you’ll be required to craft materials to create makeshift weapons that come in handy when taking on enemies, strategically choosing when to deploy them if you hope to survive. Bullets are scarce within the world of The Last of Us, so more often than not it can pay to sneak up on fools with a melee attack, rather than attracting attention via a gunshot.
