Just in case you were worried you’d seen the last of Yooka and Laylee, rest easy knowing that both colourful critters have returned in a new 2D side-scrolling spin-off called Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair. Players will be able to experience this world and these characters through a totally new angle thanks to the switched perspective, guiding the charming duo in their latest pursued to take down the evil Capital B.
If the original Yooka Laylee was a direct homage to the days of Banjo Kazooie, Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair takes its inspiration from classic Nintendo platformers like Donkey Kong Country. You’ll get to traverse a variety of rich levels, maneuvering around obstacles like fire and ice in order to succeed and make your way through safely. All this is backed up by a notably whimsical soundtrack composed by the legendary Grant Kirkhope.
Yooka Laylee and The Impossible Layer will once again be gracing every major console platform in the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, bringing its unique brand of 2.5 gameplay to players young and old. It’s up to you to rally up the royal beettalion to best Capital B’s impossible lair, using items and abilities to make every level a platforming party of epic proportions.
Developed by Playtonic, a lot of the talent working on Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair also have direct experience working on the 2D platforming classics this new game confidently evokes. This raises the bar quite some way in letting players know that they are in safe hands. New spins, however, come in the form of a fully 3D overworld and the ability to literally flip levels upside down when the situation demands it.
Those that pre-order Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair can look forward to getting ‘Trowzer’s Top Tonic Pack’, which grants access to even more power-ups sure to come in useful on the journey. Tonics include Largee Head, Glow Worm, D.I.S.C.O and others, all of which customize the two eponymous heroes in fun ways and make for a more electric platforming experience.
