Before the PS5, the PS4 Pro was every console graphics enthusiast’s dream come true. It acted as Sony’s mid-generation PS4 hardware revision that’s specifically geared towards squeezing the most visual fidelity possible out of games, capable of rendering them at eye-widening 4K resolution. This, combined with HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology ensured PS4 players could make the most of unbelievably vibrant and lifelike range of colours. To take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s image-boosting capabilities you would need to be the proud owner of a 4K-ready TV entertainment setup, before you’re able to experience games like Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man to their full potential. It's important to note that the PS4 Pro is no longer in production and as a result is very difficult to find now at retailers, your best options are most likely a refurbished PS4 or trying to get the now easier-to-attain aforementioned PS5, which is what we'd probably recommend here at GamingDeals if you have the budget. If you're looking to grab a PS5 with a pay monthly plan to spread the cost check out our PS5 Finance guide.
The PS4 Pro is the largest of the three types of PS4 to hit store shelves, beating both the PS4 Slim and original launch PS4 as the tallest and the widest. Its exact dimensions are: 29.5 x 32.7 x 5.5cm, which in layman’s terms makes it roughly 20% bigger than its younger siblings. This is still small enough to fit into any player’s average media centre, but just large enough to accommodate the increase in horsepower Sony included with this hardware revision. The PS4 Pro is easily identifiable by its layered three-tiered design.
Significant advancements have been made to the PS4 Pro in terms of horsepower, with the revised console making full use of an eight-core CPU in comparison to the other console’s one. This results in a substantial boost in power, and the same is true for the GPU which jumps from the 1.84 TFLOPs seen in the original 2013 PS4 to 4.2 TFLOPs in the PS4 Pro. It’s still the same AMD Jaguar x86-64 microarchitecture all three PS4 variants are running on, but these leaps made in other areas is what allows 4K performance to be a breeze for PS4 Pro. The PS5 will boast more than double the PS4 Pro’s power, making it a serious console juggernaut that can go toe to toe with high end gaming PCs.
Alongside the PS4 Pro’s release, a software update applicable to all PS4 consoles introduced what’s known as ‘Boost Mode’. It ostensibly acts as a toggle that unlocks more power for select PS4 games – increasing the processing speeds, shortening load times and offering smoother frame rates on a game-by-game basis. Certain PS4 games, however, have since been designed with PS4 Pro in mind and its these that can be played at true 4K. Some examples include, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Horizon: Zero Dawn.
The price of the Pro has been steadily increasing as the stock becomes harder to get. The RRP of the console was £349.99, which eventually became £349.99 with a game included. We’re now seeing less and less of the PS4 Pro on the market. If you want to stick to this generation but want the best bang for your buck, the Pro may prove to be your best option, if you can find one.
One of the most anticipated games of the 2010s, Death Stranding launched to understandable amounts of critical attention. If you consider yourself a die-hard Hideo Kojima fan, then there’s only really one option for the bundle for you. This limited edition bundle was exclusive to GAME, and came with a unique hand-print design white Pro console and a complementary translucent yellow controller. Unfortunately, stock is extremely scarce of this bundle now, so if you’re determined to get your hands on this limited edition hardware, then you’ll be limited on what sorts of deals you can grab.
FIFA is routinely the UK’s best selling game year in, year out, and so it comes as no surprise that Sony released a bundle to tie in with 2019's version. This bundle came with a copy of the game, a rare gold players pack, 3 5-game icon loans, as well as the most up-to-date version of the PS4 Pro chassis, featuring a much quieter fan than the launch model.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may be the final edition of the best-selling series to feature only on this generation of consoles, and it is determined to go out with a bang. Hailed as one of the best editions in years, Modern Warfare is a re-imagining of Call of Duty 4, which remains one of the most popular FPS titles of all time. And you can get it for a great price when bundled in with this PS4 Pro!

1. Don’t wait until Black Friday
Black Friday might seem like the sensible time to pick up a PS4 Pro, but the truth is that retailers offer their own independent sales throughout the year. In some cases, bundles including the console have been known to be sold lower earlier in the year than they ever do around Christmas time. It all comes down to taking the PS4 Pro plunge at a price point that’s best for you.
2. A PS4 Pro is best when paired with a 4K-ready TV
In order to get the most out of a PS4 Pro you’ll need a television that is 4K-ready. Without one you’ll still be able to enjoy reduced load times, smoother framerates and improved HDR lighting, but it’ll all remain at a resolution of 1080p. That’s still HD, but nothing as drastic as the 2160p resolution PS4 Pro enables game resolution to output natively.
3. You only get one Dualshock 4 controller
All three of the available PS4 console models only come packaged with one Dualshock 4 PS4 controller. This is everything you need to get started in a singleplayer game, but anyone wanting to enjoy split-screen co-op games should consider an additional controller – the standard price being £49.99.
