Every few years or so, game consoles undergo a mid-generation upgrade that revises the internal hardware and exterior design to help keep the platform feeling fresh and up to date with its peers. Released in 2016, the PS4 Pro did this for the UK’s best-selling console, making use of a slimmer, neater chassis that included some slight technical adjustments. The PS4 Slim has since replaced the original 2013 launch model as the standard PS4 console. It isn’t in any way lesser-than what came before, but features design tweaks made with player’s best interests in mind. However it is important to note that now the PS4 consoles are very difficult to get hold of due to production being stopped as focus shifts to the PS5. The stock on PS5 is now becoming more available so be sure to check out our comparison pages to find yourself a console.
The PS4 Slim is roughly 30% smaller than the PS4 model we first got our hands on in 2013. This is because technology and development has advanced far enough to fit the same components within a much neater chassis. The design of the PS4 Slim itself also differs from what came before slightly, with it now featuring a two-tiered design and a fully matted finish. Older PS4s would attract finger print marks like it was the plague, but no longer with the PS4 Slim.
In terms of pure processing power, the PS4 Slim doesn’t make any adjustments to the internal hardware specification. Both the Slim and the launch model run on AMD’s microarchitecture with an eight-core X86 Jaguar CPU and 1.84 T-FLOPS of graphical processing power, ensuring that all games run at 1080p with a silky-smooth framerate. It’s up to the game developers to take full advantage of this power – and bear in mind that, at present when it comes to 4K the latest generation PS5 is your best bet.
The PS4 Slim comes with everything you’d expect: A mono stereo headset, all the necessary cables, and a Dualshock 4 controller in the appropriate colour. The Dualshock 4, however, has received a slight redesign much like the PS4 Slim itself, with it now featuring a light bar at the top of the controller’s centre touch pad – this makes it easier to keep track of elements like character health in PS4 games that support this feature.
The PS4 Slim remains fully compatible with any game already released to the PS4 library, and it being the standard variant assures this will always be the case. If you’re a player that’s upgrading from an original launch PS4 to the Slim and are worried about losing digital games or progress, don’t! Your online PSN account means that all this will carry over. Moving your digital goods from one PS4 to another is an involved process, but a worthwhile one.
Marvel Comic’s infamous wall-crawler swung his way on the PS4 in mid-2018, gifting us with a stylish open-world adventure set in New York City that was the best rendition of Spider-Man since the PS2 days. Sony decided to celebrate this occasion by offering a slew of different PS4 Slim bundles, including those containing a 500GB or 1TB console – and even a limited edition “Amazing Red” PS4 Slim. It’s very difficult to find now, but features a gorgeous White Spider logo splashed on the console top.
Rockstar’s highly anticipated cowboy sequel finally arrived towards the end of 2018, bringing with it a PS4 Slim bundle that included a console featuring 500GB of memory. Red Dead Redemption 2 itself takes up roughly 120GB of that, but its easily expandable thanks to the PS4 Slim’s redesigned chassis that makes the internals far simpler to access. The PS4 Slim model included with the Red Dead Redemption 2 bundle is the standard Black and so is the Dualshock 4 controller.
Gran Turismo is thought of as one of gaming’s most celebrated and faithful racing franchises. Polyphony Digital’s constant iteration with regards to realistic driving physics hit its peak with PS4’s Gran Turismo Sport. A PS4 Slim bundle celebrating the game was released around the time of launch, letting purchasers feel the need for speed as they step behind the driver’s seat. You can pick up a PS4 Slim bundle featuring Gran Turismo Sport in either a 500GB or 1TB capacity.

1. Don’t wait until Black Friday
While it can seem that the best PS4 Slim deals only happen around Black Friday, all of the retailers we compare prices for run their own independent sales all year round. We’ve even seen some of the cheapest PS4 Slim deals on sale during Spring and Summer periods. Our advice is always never to wait, and instead pick up a PS4 Pro whenever you see the best deal for you.
2. PS4 Pro boasts the better visuals, PS4 Slim the best price
One of the few shortcomings of the PS4 Slim is its inability to play new releases at 4K resolution. The good news is that most people won’t be able to notice the difference, with it only ever really coming to light when the same game is being played side-by-side on a Pro and Slim simultaneously. The PS4 Slim has price on its side, always being more affordable than the higher-end PS4 Pro.
3. You only get one Dualshock 4 controller
Regardless of the PS4 model you punt for, each one will always come packaged with one Dualshock 4 PS4 controller in the box. Sold separately they retail for an average price of £49.99 – expensive, but worthwhile for use in PS4 Slim’s many split-screen multiplayer games.
If you feel like the PlayStation 4 Slim isn’t quite powerful enough for your modern gaming tastes, then you can always find a souped-up gaming experience in the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. These consoles allow you to squeeze every ounce of visual fidelity from games thanks to their unique 4K and HDR capabilities, trumping the PS4 Pro in terms of sharp detail, deep colours and framerates. With backwards compatibility on games like God of War and its own exclusives with Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy XVI and much more. The console is very much readily available now after being previously plagued with stock issues so just head over to our PS5 price comparison to see the best PS5 bundles and deals up for grabs right now.
