PS5 Frequently Asked Questions

What comes in the box?

This is for the standard PS5 and digital edition PS5 box contents, not any of the official PS5 bundles.

  • PS5 console itself
  • White DualSense controller
  • HDMI 2.1 cable
  • USB-C to USB-A cable to charge DualSense controller
  • User manual
Is the PS5 backwards compatible with PS4 games?

The PS5 is backwards compatible with most PS4 games and many of those games benefit from the PS5's power making PS4 games run at higher and smoother frame rates. There are only a few PS4 games that aren't playable on PS5:

  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen

In order to play PS4 games on a PS5 disc edition console, you can simply insert the PS4 disc and launch the game from the PS5 UI (disc must be inserted to play the game).

Obviously, for the digital edition, this will not work due to the lack of a disc drive so instead you must transfer digital games and game data from a PS4 console to your PS5 digital edition using WiFi data transfer. You can also access your PS4 games and data with a compatible storage drive that is already being used by your PS4.

Will my PS4 controller work on PS5?

The DualShock 4 will work on PS5 with supported PS4 games however it will not work for any PS5 games. PS5 games can only be played with the DualSense Wireless controller.

How much is the PS5?

The PS5 Disc/Slim Disc RRP is £479.99 and the Digital/Slim Digital PS5 RRP is £389.99.

Why was there so little PS5 stock?

The pandemic created huge demand for gaming products, while supply and production changes were heavily impacted. Sony have done an admirable job of producing as many PS5s as they have, and the sales numbers suggest its already on track to match the PS4, which has become one of the most successful consoles of all time. The difference this time is that demand is much higher. However, right now the PS5 stock is flourishing and it's easy to grab a PS5 bundle.

When will PS5 stock be at a steady level?

Thankfully PS5 stock and demand have reached an equilibrium which means consoles are readily available. However, the Slim is far more readily available then the old larger model.

What resolutions does the PS5 support?

The PS5 has several supported resolutions that we will detail below that are available via the HDMI 2.1 cable. This depends on the game itself, the resolution of your TV and also it's refresh rate. For example if your TV is 4K but only 60Hz refresh rate you will only be able to achieve a maximum of 60 Frames per Second even though the PS5 is capable of pushing up to 120FPS at this resolution in certain games.

  • 1080p (1920 x 1080) up to 120FPS (frames per second)
  • 1440p (2160 x 1440) up to 120 FPS (recently added support)
  • 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) up to 120FPS
  • 8K (7680 x 4320) up to 60FPS however there are very few 8K compatible games
When will the PS5 Slim be available?

The PS5 Slim released November 29th 2023 and is now available to pre-order across many retailers in the UK as can be seen in our PS5 price comparison above.

Choosing your PS5 bundle

Here at GamingDeals.com we compare thousands of deals every day, always finding the latest offers so you know our comparison is filled with the best offers on the market. When it comes to PS5 we have over 400 deals and bundles in the UK in our comparison above. We have a set of handy filters so you can find a bundle with the games, accessories and console model that you want at the best price. If you still need a bit of help deciding which PS5 bundle is best for you then we're here to help.

What are the bundled PS5 games and accessories?

There are two types of bundles, one being official and the other being retailer bundles. Official bundles include examples like the God of War: Ragnarok official PS5 bundle that included the standard PS5 console and a digital copy of God Of War Ragnarok. Retailers then do their own bundles, there are a lot more of these types of bundles and they vary a lot with what products are available depending on the retailer. When it comes to games that are bundled you are likely to see big first-party exclusives like Horizon Forbidden West as well as large triple-A third-party games like EA Sports FC 24.

When it comes to accessories consoles are often bundled with official accessories such as a DualSense Wireless Controller or its charging station. There is also the Pulse 3D headset which is a very popular bundle item. You can also expect memberships to PlayStations subscription services or PSN top-up cards. Most bundled items should incur some sort of discount, for example in a bundle you will not pay the full value of the items so they're a great way to get a great deal on a PS5 as well as any games or accessories that you'd be buying anyway. Make sure to use our games and accessories bundle filters on our PS5 price comparison so that you can find the ideal PS5 bundle for you at the cheapest price.

Which PS5 console is right for you?

If you're interested in a deep dive into the different PS5 models we have a great article covering that exact subject matter. But here we will put that into a more concise format to help you decide which PS5 console is right for you between the PS5 digital edition and PS5 disc edition. If you want to play physical games, watch Blu-rays and don't mind spending a bit more money then the PS5 disc edition is the way to go. If you only play games digitally, do not have any interest in watching Blu-rays, want to save some cash on the initial console investment and prefer a slightly smaller console then opt for the PS5 Digital Edition.

The PS5 Slim is also now available and also comes with a disc and digital version, meaning there are now 4 models to choose from. The same points made above still apply to the PS5 Slim model however the PS5 Slim Digital you can actually buy a separate disc drive at a later date. The PS5 Slim RRP is the same as the old models but the old models are more likely to be discounted as a result so this should be taken into consideration as well. The PS5 Slim's advantages over the original models are around a 30% reduction in size and weight as well as having a 1TB SSD instead of 825GB. There is no difference in the consoles power. The older models are becoming harder and harder to find as time goes on as they're no longer in production.

Blockbuster franchises return in 2024 with exclusive PS5 games

The PlayStation 4 platform enjoyed a great deal of financial and critical success, having launched in 2013 to quickly sell 100 million units and become the most popular home video game console. November 2020 saw it replaced with the arrival of PlayStation 5, kicking off a totally new generation with lots to look forward to.

PS5 has had a very strong start to its life with releases like God of War Ragnarok and Horizon: Forbidden West last year only solidifying this fact and 2024 is looking to deliver the goods again for PS5 owners. We've already seen exclusive Helldivers II take the world by storm in February as an intensely fun co-op PVE shooter and now the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is also exclusive on the PS5 thanks to the great relationship between Square Enix & Sony.

The library of PS5 games after 3 years on the market is extremely strong, with some must-play titles already making their home on PS5 and more being added each year.

The most powerful PlayStation console released

The next generation of consoles brings a much higher level of graphical fidelity, with further refinements made to reduce load times and push faster frame rates. The PlayStation 5 achieves this using a bespoke 8-core AMD chipset and a custom SSD. PSVR will also continue to be supported, with all pre-existing headsets compatible with PS4 already confirmed to work with PlayStation 5. PSVR2 is now available and has received glowing reviews, with titles like Horizon Call of the Mountain using its new technology incredibly bringing Sony's big first-party game series to VR.

Four models to choose from including all new PS5 Slim

Though the PS4 has embraced two console models side by side – the Slim and more powerful Pro – it’s been traditional that new consoles have launched with only one model. However, that is no longer the case with the PS5. Launching alongside a traditional console that features a Blu-ray disc drive is the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which features no drive and instead relies on digital downloads of games. Like the Xbox Series S, this version is the cheaper option, but still has the same power as the PS5 Disc Edition. On top of this PlayStation are the first to create new models with the new PS5 Slim models which are available at the same RRP as the older models but having a significantly smaller form factor and 175GB larger SSD. The PS5 Slim Digital also has the added benefit that you can add a separate disc drive at a later date if you decide you'd like to also play physical games.

A revised controller design for PlayStation 5

A next-gen PlayStation console requires a truly advanced controller, right? That's why the DualSense replaces the Dualshock as the PlayStation 5’s official gamepad of choice, shaking up the design and baking in several new modern features that make for the ultimate immersive experience. Adaptative triggers on the L2 and R2 buttons, for example, allows the controller to depict the feel of in-game actions as realistically as possible. As such, drawing back a bowstring or firing a gun delivers the appropriate haptic feedback.

The DualSense PS5 controller also features a built-in mic, removing the need for players to use a dedicated headset for chat. Then you have the revised lightbar and touchpad design, which is a lot less garish compared to how the DualShock 4 handled the concept. Also gone is the dedicated “Share” button, now replaced by the “Create” button that offers “new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world”.

Sony has also now released the DualSense Edge Wireless Controller which is a pro controller for those of you who really value high-quality peripherals for your gaming set-up. There are plenty of different DualSense controllers to choose from and you can view them all in our article that rounds up every PS5 DualSense released so far.

PS5 Console Covers

Is there any special edition PS5 console bundles?

As we approach the 3 year anniversary of the PS5 console, there has been quite a lack of new bundles compared to the first three years of the PS4. In terms of actual special editions with all-new aesthetics and designs for the console, there has actually been only one which is the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PS5 limited edition console which is only available for the disc edition PS5. It's surprising how few limited edition consoles there has actually been so far in the PS5s lifespan but we're very glad to see the Spider-Man console which does look absolutely fantastic and hopefully means we will now begin to see more and more special edition PS5s.

So why has it taken so long? In our opinion, due to the fact that the console is so constantly in demand, there isn't really any need to push consumers to buy via special edition consoles as they're selling out so quickly anyway. In addition to this, there is now a selection of galactic colour-inspired official console covers available for both the disc and digital versions of the PS5. These console covers may actually replace the need for different designs as Sony instead could just release limited-edition console covers that would allow users to change the appearance of their PS5 consoles to their own liking. This is a pretty pro-consumer move as some people will buy multiple consoles just to own the limited edition but it'd be a much better deal just purchasing the console cover. This is even the case with the Spider-Man 2 Limited edition console as the console covers that come with the bundle are available separately meaning if you already have a PS5 console you can get the limited edition look without shelling out another £500+ for another PS5. If you're interested in changing the look of your PS5 console then check out the best PS5 console cover deals. Keep in mind these PS5 console covers only fit on the original 2020 PS5 models and not on the new PS5 Slim.

It seems that Sony may also look to come out with special-edition controllers to celebrate game releases, and honestly, this is probably a more consumer-friendly move for people who like collecting, buying a controller feels a lot more approachable than several consoles. We've already seen a limited edition God of War: Ragnarok DualSense controller that came in November last year, boasting a striking blue and white design accented with two wolves howling on the controller's touchpad, and we just had the limited edition Astro Bot DualSense Controller instantly sellout after launch. We also saw a Hogwarts Legacy DualSense Wireless Controller that instantly sold out, suggesting third-party games are also an option for new controllers. We're very glad to see Sony picking back up with limited edition design consoles with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and hope that the ball will now be rolling for future console designs. We hope that Sony also keeps up with releasing the bundle items separately for collectors to enjoy, as they have with the Spider-Man 2 controller and console covers.  Be sure whatever Sony does next we will keep you informed here on GamingDeals and provide you with the best PS5 deals.

Kratos in PSVR2 why we love PS5

Why we love the PS5

1. PS5 1st party exclusives

There are many reasons to love Sony's new flagship console but the top among them is the calibre of the 1st party games on offer. PS4 had astonishingly good exclusives such as God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man and oh so many more and PS5 looks only to add upon that. Though we're early in its life cycle we've seen Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, God of War: Ragnarok, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Final Fantasy XVI, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy Rebirth with much more to come in the future. These blockbuster 1st party games are often why I say to myself yes this is why I own a PS5 console. Having these in addition to fantastic third-party titles with such a high level of performance is hard not to love.

2. The PS5's performance and loading times

The performance of the PS5 is of such a high level that it can go toe to toe with very decently specced gaming PCs and at a price they cannot compete with; although at first the price seems steep coming off the old PS4 generation the reality is that the value is very high if you appreciate fantastic frame rates at high resolutions (4K 120Hz); which as someone who is primarily a PC gamer I certainly do.

Now let's talk storage and loading times because it's one thing that Sony has smashed out of the park compared to Microsoft's Xbox Series X flagship console. Load times going from PS4 to PS5 will blow your mind as you take advantage of the PS5's internal SSD which has read speeds of 5.5GB/s. Load times for games are so much quicker which just makes your overall gaming experience much more enjoyable; especially when you're dying repeatedly in Elden Ring to Malenia.

In addition, although the 825GB (1TB for Slim models) of internal memory does soon get eaten up rather quickly due to the size of today's games adding memory to the PS5 consoles is very easy albeit expensive. You have an M.2 SSD slot in your PS5 which fits some extremely fast SSDs which will not only keep up with your PS5 console but in some cases outspeed it. You can buy SSDs in a lot of storage configurations for this slot all the way up to 4TB but the higher you go the cost is quite extreme. Below is some information regarding SSD specifications outlined by Sony so keep these in mind when you're looking at expanding your PS5 memory.

  • SSD Format: PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVME SSD
  • Storage Capacities: 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB
  • Reading Speed: Minimum of 5500MB/s or faster
  • Size w/ heatsink (L x W x H): 110mm x 25mm x 11.25 mm
  • Heatsink: Required for controlling temperatures

3. Virtual Reality is a real focus for Sony

PSVR was a big hit for Sony back on the PS4 and Sony has now released its successor PSVR2 which will be compatible with the PS5 and has been reviewed very well. The original PSVR is also compatible with PS5 the only thing you will need to do is request a PlayStation Camera Adapter directly from PlayStation support. PlayStation VR is cheaper when you own the console than building a PC capable of running VR and going for some of the competitors such as the HTC Vive.

The PSVR2 innovates and improves on everything the original hardware brought as an approachable VR solution. The controllers are being overhauled to have adaptive triggers and haptic feedback first seen on the DualSense controller only enhancing your immersion when playing in VR. Also looking under the hood the specs are looking impressive with an OLED HDR display and 2000 x 2040 per eye resolution which is a serious upgrade from the 960 x 1080 resolutions used back on the original PSVR.

When it comes to games on the PSVR2 we've had Horizon Call of the Mountain be a day one exclusive which pits you in a 1st-person perspective, bow in hand taking on the machines of the gorgeous Horizon setting, and it's looking like a real premier VR experience that will be exclusive to the Sony platform. If you're interested in hearing more we've got you covered with all the PSVR2 deals and information.
