How much is a PS5 Digital Edition?

Both the PS5 digital edition and the PS5 Slim digital RRP are £389.99

What is the difference between PS5 console and PS5 Digital Edition console

There is no difference in the internals or performance of the two consoles. The major difference is that the standard PS5 console has an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive whereas the PS5 Digital Edition does not. This means you will be tied to only being able to purchase digital versions of games for the PS5 Digital Edition. By not having a disc drive this means that the PS5 Digital Edition is slightly smaller and sleeker than its counterpart. This also means that you will not be able to use physical PS4 discs in your PS5 Digital Edition if that was something you'd have wanted the option to do.

This also means that the PS5 Digital cannot play DVDs, Blu-rays etc. Note that with the PS5 Slim Digital Edition, you can purchase a separate disk drive for £99.00 that will be able to play physical games.

What is the difference between the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition?

The PS5 Slim Digital has replaced the production of the older PS5 Digital model meaning that it is becoming harder and harder to find stock of the older model. There's no reason to go for the older model as the price is the same for the new and improved PS5 Slim Digital; here are the key differences between the PS5 digital consoles.

  • PS5 Slim Digital is around 24% lighter than the original PS5 Digital as well as being around 30% smaller
  • You can purchase a separate disk drive for the PS5 Slim Digital if you wish to play physical games in the future
  • The PS5 Slim Digital comes with 1TB SSD whereas the older model had a smaller SSD of 825GB
What resolutions does the PS5 Digital Edition support?

The supported resolutions are as follows: 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p. PS5 Digital Edition can output resolutions up to 2160p (4K Ultra HD) when hooked up to a 4K TV/display

PS5 Digital Edition Deals, Bundles and Prices

Offering an incredible value-for-money proposition for gamers, the PS5 Digital consoles feature the incredible power of the fully-fledged PS5 model, but, as the name suggests, does away with the disc drive and offers a significant saving in the process. If you choose to go with a PS5 Slim Digital console you can also choose to buy a disc drive separately for £99, so if you change your mind about playing physical games later on you're covered.

While some will always favour the idea of physical media, the PS5 Digital Edition is the perfect choice for players who tend to focus on a smaller number of games for longer, and therefore won’t get the usual benefits associated with trading in games regularly. If you’re the sort of player who finds yourself going back to the same few games for years, then the PS5 Digital Edition is the perfect way to save yourself some cash. The PlayStation store also offers a lot of sales and savings which can lead to digital games being greatly discounted, this tends to only be the case for older titles though and new triple-A games will most likely be cheaper in physical formats when purchased at or close to release. This is an important detail to consider if you're buying the digital console in a bid to save money as in the long run the option of purchasing physical games could also save you a lot of money.

Just how much cash? The PS5 Digital console has an RRP of £389.99 – a full £90 less than the disk version. The Digital Edition will continue to represent the best-value PS5 for the foreseeable future.

We compare prices on the PS5 Digital Edition / PS5 Slim Digital Edition from all the UK’s leading major retailers, as well as finding bundles with games, accessories, and everything you might need for the ultimate PS5 gaming experience.

Save money with digital currency cards and PlayStation store sales

One advantage of the PS5 digital edition is the ability to double up on your savings as a result of certain online key sellers providing PSN currency cards for less than their actual value and PlayStation themselves often running deep discounts on their games. Check out our comparison for PSN gift cards to see the current savings. This means that although you're unable to buy physical games for the PS5 digital edition you might be picking up games even cheaper!

Save space with the sleek PS5 digital edition design

The design of the PS5 is rather striking and in-person it is definitely larger than a lot of previous Playstation consoles. The PS5 digital as a result of not having a disc drive is sleeker and symmetrical compared to its counterpart making it both more aesthetically pleasing and easy to fit into your gaming set-up. Plus whilst you're saving money on the console itself you're also not having to store all those physical games on your shelves, keeping them nice and tidy. This gets even better when you see that the PS5 Slim Digital is even smaller, weighing in at only 2.6 kg.

Take advantage of the new tiers of PlayStation Plus with the PS5 Digital Edition

As of June 2022 PlayStation Plus has been split into 3 tiers each with new features that are very suitable for PS5 Digital Edition owners. PlayStation Plus Essential members will get one monthly PS5 game and 2 monthly PS4 games available to download digitally as well as online multiplayer access and cloud storage. PlayStation Plus Extra boasts a large catalogue of PS5 and PS4 games (including blockbuster titles such as God of War and Returnal) all digitally available as well as the previous features of the PS Plus Essential membership. Finally, the most expensive tier; PlayStation Plus Premium, will give all prior features mentioned as well as access to a catalogue of PS1, PS2 and PSP classics as well as PS3 games that you can stream to the console. None of the features of the new PS Plus tiers are limited by the PS5 Digital Edition console, and if you do go for the digital route these memberships are highly likely to be worth the investment. Head over to our dedicated PlayStation Plus page for more information on the subscriptions as well as the best PlayStation Plus deals and prices currently available.

Extend PS5 Digital storage to suit your needs with compatible M2 SSDs

If you're going all digital your PS5's SSD is going to get filled up pretty quickly if you play a lot of different games, especially considering how large some games come these days. But luckily it's pretty easy to expand the storage on your PS5 digital even if it does come at a cost. You have an internal M.2 PS5 SSD slot on your PS5 which can expand storage by up to 4TB and still maintain those exceptional loading speeds you're used to on your PS5.

When purchasing an SSD for the PS5 Digital Edition make sure that it's PCIe Gen4, 250GB-4TB capacity, 5,500 MB/s read speed or higher, 22mm width and has a built-in heatsink. You can buy heatsinks separately but there are a lot of models now that come with heatsinks and will be advertised as PS5 compatible. Having these heatsinks already attached makes installation even easier.

Make your PS5 Digital Edition stand out with console covers and limited edition DualSense PS5 controllers

Whilst special edition consoles may be a thing of the past Sony is still allowing you to customise your PS5 Digital Edition console to suit your set-up's aesthetic through the console covers that can be removed and swapped out for a selection of colours. There are currently 5 galactic-themed console covers you can use for the PS5 digital. There are also some different console covers now available for the PS5 Slim digital, so make sure you're buying the right cover for your digital PS5 console. It's a bit cheaper than having to buy a brand-new console to change up the looks.

Whilst it is a shame limited edition consoles may be left in the PS4 generation Sony has seemingly moved to celebrating their hottest launches with limited edition PS5 DualSense controllers. Both God of War Ragnarok and Hogwarts Legacy have fantastic-looking controllers released alongside them that sold out very quickly, the demand is there so hopefully Sony will continue to deliver on these. There's also a great selection of controllers that match the console covers which are much easier to get your hands on.
