Why purchase a PlayStation 5 Pro?

Sony's goal with the PlayStation 5 Pro is for it to be the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation. If you're unhappy with how current-gen-only games perform on your Current PlayStation 5, or want more stability and performance for backwards-compatible PS4 games, then the PlayStation 5 pro is for you.

The other reason to get a PlayStation 5 Pro now is for the future. You don't need a PlayStation 5 Pro to play games like God of War Ragnarök or Marvel's Spider-Man 2 with consistent frames in performance mode or excellent detail in fidelity mode, but for games that are coming out in the future, something big like Grand Theft Auto 6, for example, then the PS5 Pro might be the only way to play a game on fidelity mode with a consistent 60 frames per second.

The final reason you might want to get a PlayStation 5 Pro right now is if you want a PlayStation console with 2TB of storage instead of 1TB, if you don't want to purchase a seperate NVMe SSD to install into the PS5's expandable storage slot.

What size is the PS5 Pro?

The PS5 Pro is somehwere between the current PlayStation Slim consoles and the original PS5 standard console when it comes to height, width and depth. The exact dimensions are 358 x 96 x 216mm, which makes it the same width as the Slim console but the same height of the original PS5. The PS5 consoles are fairly large machines compared to the PS4s, but should fit in the average media centre. The PS5 Pro doesn't come with a verticle stand, so if you want it to be stable when upright you'll have to get the verticle stand seperately.

How much more powerful is PS5 Pro?

According to Sony, the PS5 Pro has 67% more computing cores with 28% faster RAM and 45% faster rendering from the GPU. Sony also claims that Ray tracing is up to three times faster than the original PS5. There's also the addition of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) uses machine learning to improve image clarity and add detail. Though most people can't take advantage of it yet, the PS5 Pro can also use Wi-Fi 7.

How much does a PS5 Pro cost?

The price of the PS5 Pro console at launch is £699.99. Since releasing on the 10th of October, stock levels have been much better than the original PS5 was, and there were even a few day-one discounts of around £5.

Three things to consider before buying a PS5 Pro

1. Don’t wait until Black Friday

Black Friday might seem like the sensible time to pick up a PS5 Pro, but the truth is that retailers offer their own independent sales throughout the year. In some cases, bundles including the console have been known to be sold lower earlier in the year than they ever do around Christmas time. It all comes down to taking the PS5 Pro plunge at a price point that’s best for you.

2. A PS5 Pro is best when paired with a 4K-ready TV

In order to get the most out of a PS5 Pro you’ll need a television that is 4K-ready. Without one you’ll still be able to enjoy more storage, smoother framerates and improved Ray Tracing, but it’ll all remain at a resolution of 1080p. That’s still HD, but nothing as drastic as the 2160p resolution PS5 Pro enables game resolution to output natively.

3. You only get one Dualsense controller

All three of the available PS5 console models only come packaged with one Dualsense controller. This is everything you need to get started in a singleplayer game, but anyone wanting to enjoy split-screen co-op games should consider an additional controller – the standard price being £59.99.
