The Xbox Series S retails at £249.99 but is often discounted to significantly less. During Black Friday 2022 we saw the console at retailers such as Currys for just £189.00, quite the discount on an already reasonably priced console. The 1TB Xbox Series S is £299.99.

By default, the console has 512GB PCIe GEN4 NVMe SSD Storage however, 364GB is the total available for the user as a portion is reserved for the operating system. The Xbox Series S 1TB model has a 1TB PCIe GEN4 NVMe SSD, but the total storage available will be 852GB with space taken by the OS. Both can be expanded with a Seagate or WD_Black Storage Expansion card.

In keeping with the modern trend for multiple models of the same console to cater to a wide range of gaming tastes and styles, Microsoft is, for the first time, launching two different models of a new Xbox generation. While the Series X may be the more powerful console, the value for money offered from the Series S console is little short of remarkable.
Capable of supporting games running at 120FPS with a resolution of 1440p, boasting 4K upscaling, and 4K media playback, the Xbox Series S will open the eyes of current-generation players to a world of incredible realism and smooth performance. If you’re not someone who owns a 4K television, the Xbox Series S will give let you sample the next generation of gaming without spending money on features you’re not able to make the most of.
All of this is built upon a 512GB or 1TB SSD. With the current generation of consoles utilising traditional hard drives, the move to SSDs results in a marked improvement in loading times. What’s more remarkable is that this entire package begins with an RRP of £249, putting it roughly on par with the current base level of PS4 and Xbox One offers. Black Friday 2023 saw the console drop as low as £179.99 so we'd expect the sales this year to see it fall even further.
With so much tech crammed in, you’d be forgiven for assuming that Microsoft have resorted to using hefty, unwieldy components. On the contrary, the Xbox Series S packs all of this power into the smallest Xbox ever, a remarkable piece of engineering that will fit comfortably into any entertainment centre.
The first official bundle for the Xbox Series S was released back in December 2021 and it came with a lot of goodies for the free-to-play games Rocket League and Fortnite. This included both skins and currency to spend in the game's stores. This year the 2nd official bundle was released in late November 2022: the Xbox Series S Gilded Hunter Bundle (pictured above). This bundle contained in-game skins and currencies for Rocket League, Fortnite and Fall Guys. The latest bundle was the Xbox Series S Starter bundle which was released in October 2023 and is still readily available, this bundle contained the 512GB Series S alongside 3 Months of Game Pass Ultimate for £249.99 RRP and has also had some fantastic price drops.
Of course, we don’t need to rely on hard bundles from Microsoft; you'll often see all sorts of offers from various retailers, who include a game at a heavy discount with the console to incentivise you to buy from them. Another popular option is retailers bundling the console with an external hard drive. Though the Series S’s SSD is a huge leap forward in terms of performance, its relatively limited 512GB capacity means there’s a big market for expanding the storage capacity. A bundle with an extra hard drive therefore makes a lot of sense. Furthermore, as the console doesn’t have a disc drive and relies solely on digital downloads and streaming, we sometimes see retailers bundling subscriptions to the hugely successful Xbox Game Pass with the console.
What we also see is several retailers bundling the console (which comes with a new version of the Xbox controller as standard) with a second controller. If you're planning on some local multiplayer action, then you could do a lot worse than picking up both the console and two controllers in one fell swoop.
In 2023 we saw the first entirely new model of the Xbox Series S with a new sleek all-black version with expanded memory.
In October 2024 you'll now be able to get the 1TB Series S model in the same Robot White as the original.
As previously mentioned the 512GB NVME SSD is one of the shortcomings when it comes to the original Xbox Series S, as an all-digital console all your games need to be downloaded locally for you to be able to access them and with the size of some triple-A games reaching 100GB in size now that 512GB is soon eaten up. To alleviate this issue Xbox have their storage expansion options which are simple to install and allow you to expand your available space significantly. On top of this option, Xbox has decided to release another Xbox Series S model that comes with a 1TB NVME SSD standard which is almost double the space of the original.
This new Xbox Series S 1TB edition comes in a full carbon black finish which may be more appealing to some than the white finish of the original Xbox Series S. The pricing is £299.99 RRP so around £50 more than the 512GB Xbox Series S, we'd say that this extra memory capacity is worth shelling out for if you're looking to jump into Xbox's all-digital platform.
Xbox Series S is already a tremendous value proposition and this is only elevated when you pair the console with a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. As a digital-only console, this subscription makes a lot of sense, opening up a huge amount of titles that are ready to be downloaded and played, the only issue you may have to solve is regarding the 512GB SSD because you'll have so many games to play!
Things have been a bit slow of late regarding exclusives for Xbox outside releases like Starfield which came day one Xbox Game Pass Ultimate but hopefully, 2024 will see titles like STALKER and Avowed hit the service on day one and improve the already incredible value you're getting with the subscription. Not only is Xbox Game Pass Ultimate the smart way to play Xbox Exclusives for less there are also tonnes of third-party games available on day one such as Atomic Heart, Persona 5 Royal, Stardew Valley, GTA V, Lies of P and much more.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate normally sets you back around £10.99 a month which is one of the best deals in gaming offering a tonne of titles and access to Xbox Online services and is most certainly worth it at this price. However, remember that you can get it for even less from retailers like CDKeys.com or by taking advantage of different sign-up offers Xbox have available at different times.
Having launched on November 10th 2020, the Xbox Series S is available and with plenty of bundle options both official and retailer-specific.
Though not quite as in-demand as the PS5 or the Xbox Series X, the Series S has still proved to be a popular console.
