Back 4 Blood is a new co-operative first-person shooter from the people behind the Left 4 Dead series, built entirely from the ground up for both PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X and last-gen consoles. It places you and up to three friends against hordes of undead flesh-eaters at the centre of a city. What were once human hosts for the creatures within have now transformed into nightmarish creatures and only the bullets in your gun can stop them.
Left 4 Dead fans have been crying out for years for a third game to finish off the trilogy. Franchise owner Valve, however, don’t want to give into this demand, so developer Turtle Rock Studios have stepped back in with a spiritual successor in Back 4 Blood. You can fight against the hordes solo, but only really when gunning alongside friends online does the zombie-slaying action hit its stride.
Survive the outbreak in Back 4 Blood on PlayStation, Xbox and PC
Back 4 Blood is a co-operative shooter in a familiar style, but original features help separate it from what’s come before. One example of this is the new cards system, which provides various adjustments to gameplay prior to each online session starting. These might modify player health, affect the amount of damage you can dish out, all of which help to keep teams of four on their toes when blasting through legions of flesh-eaters. This you can do on both current- and last-gen consoles, as well as PC.
Competitive PVP adds extra value
Though PVE co-op is Back 4 Blood’s main focus, first-person shooter players that like to test out their trigger fingers on the competitive scene have nothing to worry about. The game includes a PVP mode that lets you play with or against friends, with both the human and undead sides boasting a unique suite of weapons, abilities and perks.
Multi-layered levels designed to be replayed
Back 4 Blood’s card system introduces certain Rogue-Lite elements, encouraging players to replay campaign levels using gameplay modifiers. These are unlocked once you finished the story either alone or with friends, and at their worst could see you fight against mutated boss types that stretch up to 20 feet tall. Come for the tight-feeling shooting but stay for the various alternating gameplay types.
Regarding new controller colourways and having options, Microsoft is killing it. As a result, we thought you might want to see a round-up of every single controller released since the Xbox Series X and S hit shelves back in November 2020.
