Nintendo’s colourful real-time strategy series makes an exuberant return in 2020 by way of a new Nintendo Switch port. Pikmin 3 Deluxe fully remasters the third series entry, where players must control the astronaut Olimar and his friends to help guide the alien race of Pikmin on a bunch of tasks. You’ll explore the world from a pint-sized perspective looking for a way home.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe is all about commanding your own crop of the titular creatures, using the abilities of each type to help defeat enemies, overcome puzzles and seek out food. Your main objective is to explore the land in search of a new food source, but several side missions and additional DLC stages see you venture off the beaten path momentarily.
The original Pikmin 3 was a Wii U exclusive released at the start of that console’s life, but it now coming to Switch via a Deluxe edition means an all-new generation will now get to experience it. What’s more, it’s been fully remastered to meet 2020 graphical standards and includes a host of added features like new side stories, lock-on targeting and a variety of difficulty settings.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe will mark another great Nintendo exclusive featuring 2 player co-op, as almost the entire journey can be played through with a friend. One person takes on the role of Olimar while the other plays as Louie and together you can work efficiently to collect enough fruit to further grow your Pikmin Squad.
Because the original version of Pikmin 3 utilised the Wii U’s touchpad as well as your TV screen, some adjustments have been made for the Deluxe iteration in terms of the controls and UI. The gamepad map, for example, can be toggled on and off for the ultimate convenience and we have to assume that the Switch’s joy-con will replicate the original game’s touch controls.
