A spiritual successor to the much-loved Fallout 3 spin-off, New Vegas, Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds is a new role-playing game set in space that’s simply brimming with things to see and do. How you do it and who you do it as is entirely up to you, with almost endless character creation opportunities and choices at your disposal right from the off. From here you can find your ship, explore various settlements and lead your own crew of companions off on a grand adventure.

Set in a region of space where galactic megacorporations have started to colonize planets for their own economic gain, you act as the universe’s only chance of reigning them back and investigating the true purpose of these companies’ efforts. The Outer Worlds is a sprawling sci-fi story that can easily branch off into distance paths depending on your actions – go forth and see where it takes you.

A space-based RPG from the makers of Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas released shortly after Fallout 3 to extremely positive critical acclaim. People enjoyed how that story let them thinly tread the line between right and wrong – a similar challenge that will be presented in The Outer Worlds. Your moral stance is determined by which of the several in-game factions you choose to link up with. Don’t be surprised if one small decision has lasting repercussions!

Whether you’re playing on PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch, The Outer Worlds shares a lot of similarities to the Fallout series but infuses it with a satirical brand of comedy. Important moral choices to make? Check. Vital companions to manage? Of course. Combine these traditional RPG traits with a colourful world and tight-feeling gunplay and you have The Outer Worlds.

Craft your character through decisions and dialogue

This being an RPG first and foremost, there are countless ways to upgrade and customize your own character before setting off on the wider adventure. Most of this will be determined by the choices you make, yes, but don’t discount the effectiveness of The Outer Wilds’ in-depth character creator. Will you be male, female, human or alien? Nothing is off the table in this wildly inventive universe.

The Outer Worlds weapons

Multiple weapons types to get to grips with

The Outer Wilds features both ranged and melee combat, letting you get a hold of various types of weapon that each boast either light, medium or heavy ammo. Most will also apply elemental damage to enemies when fired such as frost, fire and corrosive. You’ll eventually find a groove with which weapon and ammo type works best for you, as you decide whether to take on factions head on or using a more stealthy approach.

Choose the skills your character will specialise in

As well as adapting depending on what you say and do, in true Fallout fashion The Outer Worlds is an experience that will open up itself differently to you based on the skills you focus on. Lock-picking offers access to walled-off areas, for instance, while hacking equally reveals its opportunities. Will you be methodical and take the engineering route or pour your points into combat abilities? The Outer Worlds gives you these options and more.

Recruit any companions you come across

The Outer Worlds makes sure you won’t have to explore the galaxy alone, seeing you come across various recruitable companions useful for fighting against the consumerist government. You can have up to two with you at any time, providing you with a range of different options as you work to complete objectives. You’re perfectly welcome to go into scenarios guns blazing, but why not make the most of the solutions companions unlock?
