The Nintendo Switch might not be short when it comes to vibrant open-world games that invite you to get lost in them, but Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition represents a second chance for Nintendo fans to experience this overlooked Wii U gem. It depicts Shulk’s original journey to defend the floating world of Alrest against the machines – now lovingly remastered with new features and visuals.

Events kick off when robot invaders known as the Mechon begin to wreak havoc, leading Shulk and his party of friends to fight back. Doing so requires Shulk to embrace the full power of his mysterious Monado blade, which you can customize and upgrade the more the adventure goes on. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is a sprawling JRPG in the most classic sense, seeing you fight monsters, complete side quests and more.

A Wii U cult classic reinvented for Nintendo Switch

Xenoblade Chronicles was originally a Wii U game that largely fell under the radar. However, the sting of this was offset somewhat when its sequel debuted early on in the Nintendo Switch’s lifecycle – but what about players who missed out on the first game? This is now remedied through Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, which retains the series’ mix of exploration and real-time combat, bringing it to a new base of players.

Master chain attacks and beat down the Mechon menace

Xenoblade Chronicles’ action takes place entirely in real time, seeing you acquire new equipment and weapon skills that let’s you go toe-to-toe with stronger enemies.  Your best bet, though, is to master the chain attack system, which lets you take on foes in quick succession, dealing as much damage as possible using all your party members.

New features exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version

In addition to the original game, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition brings a boatload of new features including HD visuals, smoother gameplay and remastered music tracks. The most notable is a brand new epilogue developed specifically for this release, letting you follow the adventures of Shulk and gang on a new journey that bridges the gap between this game and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
